Treatment Approaches to Individual Issues: Depression, Anxiety, and Trauma
I have almost 25 years of experience helping people who are struggling with Depression, Anxiety (including Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Social Anxiety, Generalized Anxiety Disorder) and Trauma symptoms. The methods which I use are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy known as CBT, Traumatic Incident Reduction or TIR, and Mindfulness. These are proven to be the most current and effective approaches. I am well trained in these approaches and I am continually updating my interventions and resources.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the most effective and efficient approach for Depression and Anxiety. It is a caring method that works with or without antidepressant medication. The emphasis is to teach clients skills, so they do not have to rely on medication. With CBT, clients learn to change the cognitive and behavioral habits that directly impact their feelings of depression and anxiety. When followed properly, CBT helps in a positive, prompt, and lasting manner. I have helped many people over the years become happier and calmer using a CBT approach.
What will therapy be like if I have Depression and/or Anxiety?
First I will conduct an assessment interview to listen to your struggles and symptoms. Based on your goals, together we will build an individualized treatment program. If you are Depressed or Anxious, I will start with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). We can begin right away. You do not have to suffer.
We will look at issues troubling you in your current life, and I will teach you the skills (cognitive and behavioural) to be happier and calmer. You will have homework and we will reassess briefly each session to make sure positive changes are happening. I have lots of resources to support you.
If you have experienced or witnessed a traumatic or stressful situation (including grief, car accidents, work related stress), you may have some symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD. I use a very powerful and aptly named therapy: Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR). I have practiced this method for over ten years, and the results have been amazing and lasting. We may also use some CBT because symptoms of Depression and Anxiety often intermingle with the symptoms of Stress and Trauma.
Because I am a Certified Gottman Couples Therapist (CGT) I can also help individuals who have relationship problems. Individuals can come alone for help regarding stressful relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners. Or if you are on the verge of separating, please come see me.
Please call to set up an appointment or to ask for more information. I would be happy to tell you more about these treatments and how I can help you.
